Halloween Helpers - 21-Oct-2008
Dear Oakwood Neighbors:
It's that time of year again! Halloween is quickly approaching and we need your help with the OHA Children's Halloween parties.
The party for the younger children will be Sunday, October 26th from 1pm to 3pm. This festivity will include games, facepainting, hayride, cakewalk, as well as some other fun activities.
The party for the older kids will be that same day, from 7-9pm. There will be popcorn and a movie, with the main event being our famous "Haunted Hayride".
Since this is a neighborhood event we are looking for neighborhood participation in making it a success. Please get involved in helping, it's very rewarding and a great way to meet new
people and neighbors.
How you can help:
1. Workers to man booths. (facepainting, cakewalk, games etc.)
We will have four 1/2 hour shifts for each booth. The first shift will be responsible for setting it up and the last shift will tear down and clean up.
If we don't have enough volunteers we will have less activities ( I know this won't be the case ).
3. Help cleaning up afterwards.
4. Baked goods for our cake walk. Instead of whole cakes and whole batches of cookies, we would like the prizes to be packaged smaller, such as half-cakes, 6 or so cookies in a package, 6 cupcakes, brownies, etc. To be brought to the club house at 11am the day of the party.
5. A truck and trailer for the hayride.
6. People to "haunt" the hayride (our dads had so much fun last year).
Thank you in advance for your time and help. It's going to be an awesome day for our children.
Sincerely,
Donna Wolfanger

ATV - No Tolerance Policy for Lakeland - 16-Jul-2007
per Bob Wherry, City Manager As Springtime arrives, we want to remind residents that All Terrain Vehicles (ATV’s), motorized dirt bikes and similar) may NOT be operated on City streets, public property or private property without advance authorization of the property owner.
Illegal use of such vehicles on public and private property has caused extensive damage and is also dangerous. The Shelby County Sheriff Office has advised that, due to the number of complaints and damage by All Terrain Vehicles (ATV’s), they are instituting a “Zero Tolerance" policy on illegal use of ATV’s. If you are caught, you will get a citation.
Residents noting illegal usage of ATV's should contact the Shelby County Sheriff at 901-379-7625. (Only call 911 if it is a life threatening matter.) The Shelby County Sheriff has been excellent about responding, but many times it is not possible for them to respond while the ATV is there. Residents should not personally confront the ATV violator.
We appreciate residents calling the Shelby County Sheriff on illegal usage of ATV's and similar equipment.

Removal of Trees - 26-Feb-2007
February 15, 2007 OHA Homeowners
Our office wanted to keep you informed of activities in your neighborhood that may cause concern or comment. Recently, a resident requested assistance from our office to have a tree evaluated that they believed was a hazard. It is the City’s policy to not perform hazard tree evaluations on private property unless they directly affect public safety (i.e. they are hanging over a public roadway or public trail, etc.). Therefore, we sent this resident a list of the International Society of Arborists (ISA ) Certified Arborists in Shelby County. The resident had the tree evaluated by an ISA Certified Arborist who deemed the tree hazardous. If a tree is deemed by an ISA Certified Arborist to be a hazard, then no tree removal permit is required from the City. However, this tree may be located in the 30’ deep non-disturb area of Oakwood Phase 4. Therefore, you may get calls and concerns about the activity.
This brings up the issue of what to do when a tree within this non-disturb area is deemed hazardous. The following is the City’s recommendation on how to proceed in those situations. First, it should be emphasized again that the City does not perform hazard tree evaluations on private property. Therefore, residents who feel that a tree greater than 3” diameter breast height (DBH = 4.5’ above ground) within the non-disturb area is hazardous and want to remove it need to have the tree evaluated by an ISA Certified Arborist. If the tree is deemed hazardous by an ISA Certified Arborist then the City will not prevent the removal of that hazard. However, when that hazard tree is removed from the non-disturb area they are not allowed to follow that removal with the installation of sod or other improvements that would not be expected in a natural setting or that cause a disruption to that natural setting. It would be acceptable, and even encouraged, to replant the non-disturb area with native trees: however, that is not
